Chapter 7

Liquid/Solid Interfaces

The liquid/solid interface is introduced with the concept of contact angles and the Young-Dupré equation. Adhesion, wetting, and spreading are illustrated. The thermodynamic requirement that a higher-energy liquid cannot spontaneously cover a lower-energy substrate is stressed as a fundamental principle.

Key Words: adhesion, contact angle, detergency, spreading, Young-Dupré equation, wetting, spreading coefficient, work of adhesion, work of cohesion
