Chapter 5

Processing Methods for Making Emulsions and Suspensions

Emulsions andsuspensions are made by comminution in all the following methods. Stirring and grinding equipment is described and their efficacies compared. These include high-speed stirrers, high-shear mills, media mills, and heavy-duty mixers. Emphasis is placed on the ability of laboratory processors to be scaled up to pilot and plant size. Making emulsions by other methods is treated in Chapter 22.
